just a little bit I learned at Toonfest 2006 Burbank
I talked to a lot of Disney people. My impression is that the people who actually work for Toontown knew it would be a HUGE hit but that maybe the Disney Bossbots didn't quite get how huge the turnout would be.
My impression, or I read somewhere, that the California event was the idea of the people who work for toontown and this really is the third or even fourth year. I believe the initial thing was we as fans were "invited" to the company party and it has just grown. If you search archives you will see it started at their North Hollywood location and then moved to Disney Studios. The 2005 event was no where as big as the 2006 and 2006 sold out very quickly.
Obviously, Disney is unique as a MMPRPG in that they HAVE ready access to places to hold get togethers. I really wonder if in the future they may do it like they do "grad nite" in Disneyland and WDW...open a park for a private party with limited rides during an off hour. I frankly, would get nostalgic I am sure for the sweetness of 2005 and 2006 parties. There was such a sense of it being a family...small carnival...main street type get together. The toontown staff were accessable to fans to chat with etc. For me at least the best part was being able to meet the faces behind the game. But I do think if they made it even bigger it would be a success. We were practically buying out the stock of the Studios store which is not usually open to public. I think just with that it probably went from 2005 where it had to cost them a lot of money..they fed us and it was free. The admission was cheap this year but we also bought our own food and many toons bought a LOT at the store. I would think that would make the Cashbots happy.
I hope any of this would help you think of ways to help them to get a UK event or even a Euro event.
I think it is great fun to have a special Disney event. I think it has to be a win win for Disney because of the huge guest loyalty things like that build. Nothing like letting us feel like a part of the family.
