The end of TIPS (someone else want to take it?)

Hi Folks,

Once again I've fallen behind maintaining the application, and I just haven't found the time to do the rewrite the application despirately needs. Its my decision to pull the plug on TIPS sometime in the near future.

If there is a .NET developer out there who would like to take over the code base (its ugly--- 1st .NET app I did over 3 years ago) you are welcome to the code and I'd be happy to redirect traffic to your site.

Thanks for all your support and kind words over the years--- it has been greatly appreciated!

I have already PM'd you Nick but I would be willing to help out with the TIPS project.

I do have a few suggestions:

Bring TIPS as is over to the new domain with minor changes reflective on new operational environment

Rewrite TIPS as a JAVA app getting away from some of the .NET issues.

Allow users to choose which districts they receive invasions for ie don't send at this time for Nutty River/Nutty Summit.

I'm all for keeping with .net or if I get a spurt of craziness i might even port it over to php. But we shall see.

If worse comes to worse i can edit .net apps.

There is nothing fancy about the app; its a simple user registration system combined with a "reporting" mechanism that plays a .wav file as a bgsound when an invasion is reported. I've disabled e-mail support as that caused a horrible mess in the beginning. That's all. No reason it can't be ported to another platform, no reason it can't stay as-is (except that its learning code).

My goal was to pitch the entire code base and rewrite from scratch. There are a lot of new features in .NET 2.0 that would cover the user registration system. One item I wanted to add was the ability to add districts in the browser. But there's a catch to that:

The .wav files that do the announcement are presently generated in a .NET win app. They read a database of the cogs vs. districts to pre-generate each sound file. Some names are spelled differently so they "sound" better. This is using the MS Speech SDK as a core technology. Once the files are pre-generated, I upload them--- all 1100 of them! Hence, why adding districts isn't the easiest thing to do.

Wondered if there was a web service out there that would generate the speech wav files for me, then download that to the web cache instead of pre-generating all of them.

What I had hoped to do was make this all part of a admin portion of the website, but that would require the speech sdk to be loaded on the host. With Nick owning the server its likely not an issue, but it is a consideration if you are considering a port to another platform. Its not a simple slam dunk (nor is it rocket science).

I'm sooooo happy TIPS is going to survive. I'm new to TIPS and I love it (even though it's currently not working for me at all) but I have been working feverishly to notify all the mods/admins about the possibility of losing TIPS so that maybe someone would step up and take it over. And now I see maybe I didn't need to do all that work at all. Looks like others love TIPS as well. Thanks everyone!!!! You too Greg.

I may make something new based on TIPS.
It may be more effective, cause I think it uses .NET 2.0
I will be downloading the .NET App later.

I want to know, can I try to make a new type of TIPS, but renamed as TIPS 2? Since I think it is using .NET 2.0, I will be using the 2 for TIPS xD
It will be a redesigned software to make it a lot alike, but in many ways, diffrent.
