Minor test bug

It's very minor, but it "bugs" me, being something of a perfectionist when it comes to the written language.

Those of us toons who have names that end with an "S" have probably seen that our houses have our names on them like so:

"Pinnatus's House".

When it should be:

"Pinnatus' House".

Minor quibble, but still, accuracy is important. This may only apply to the English version of ToonTown, I'm not sure how other languages construct possesives.

Well, I'm not sure what languages are available. When we applied we were asked if we wanted a localised version (they must go on the address).

We said yes, and our speedchat shows Australian English. We dont have what other people tell me they have under the "Hello" section, as ours starts with G'Day. Under Goodbye ours says "oooroo" (which is cool cause of the three ooo's making a great noise).

The only complaint I really have is that I am not a Steve Irwin fan and somebody really should have told Disney that us Aussies dont say "Crikey" when we mean "wow".

My guess is toons like Gnurk and Sir Spunky Flipperflap got offered local versions for their respective areas of Denmark and Italy. Heaven only knows what Disney did for Curly Snorklesnout who is from Scotland. Subtitles maybe?

OK, have to leave for now, the bell on the other leg is ringing ....

I have no idea if or how you can; I always had the impression (assumed, given Disney's global reach) that there were localized versions that displayed different text appropriate to the locale, meaning it would be possible to speedchat with someone who doesn't speak English.

It'd be amusing to be speaking to someone in your english speedchat menu and not know that theirs was rendering it in Japanese or something.

Of course, it would make being SFs much harder if you didn't share a common language or even character set. Maybe it isn't available for other languages after all...

indeed

Your toon friends are taking you for a ride.

I have a good friend who speaks no english, but he manages with SpeedChat. Secret stuff has to be Italian tho or he is lost.

OK, I had better give a decent answer then.

At the start of loading Toontown to play, if you look in your log file you will see something like this:
Quote:
generating configrc using: '-windowed'
Localizer: Running in language: english
That is the only thing I have spotted so far to indicate that there is provision for languages other than English (albeit by implication rather than statement).

The provision of foreign languages wouldn't be too difficult.

Anybody using speed chat would have the relevant entry shown in your language. It only then needs all the various shopkeeper talk to be translated.

Not too difficult at all. The hardest decision will be if you are going to change the store-fronts to the new languages (which would then add complexities). If the decision is to leave it as english, then you can make the game foreign-language enabled with a couple of translators and some programming time.

they don't have a Scottish words for toontown they don't even have proper english, too many "americanisms" and the grammar is really bad some times, if this is designed for kids at least the english should be correct. My favourite is

"i need to defeat some the minglers"

when it should be "i need to defeat some of the minglers"
