It also helps to control flooding a site with lots of messages. A person could place in their signature an avertisement then quickly type hit lots of threads. Hackers and people who are going to sites to advertise make lots of new accounts and do not care if they get banned.

It may be to stop spammers but spammers seem to get around that.

I know that management could make it 1,000 character minimum if they wanted to so we are lucky Nick is a nice dude and lets us get away with only 10 characters.
