I know this one for littlespike: The latency is the delay from the time in which you do something like click your mouse or move your character on your PC to the time the game server "sees" it. The time is measured in millisec. Eg 1000 msec = 1 second.
The synch is the variation + or -, between several packets sent back and forth.
In networks you can do an IP ping, to a host to see how long the delay is. YOu can also do an IP Trace route to see where your packet went and got routed.
Since the Internet packet route can change based on congestion, protocol, packet loss etc... you will have some variation any way. Lost (i.e corrupted or un-acknowldged) packets may get re-tried till they timeout.
The other Function key shows your co-ordinates in game. Kinda like a map with longitude (up and down) and latitude (left/right). The x,y reference is relative to the map/game layout scripted in each HQ, each PG etc... If you laid each PG or HQ out on a grid, you could map each location of each object/character and each scripted action.
Most of the game runs locally on your PC. That is why even with major delay on the network, you can still be moving around and stuff even though the game server doesn't acknowldge your actions. This accounts for things like picking gags and seeing things on your screen that others don't see. Sometimes the server only invalidates the characters in each instance after a timeout or if you disconnect and log back in. That's why you may see "ghost toons" or artifacts in some game instances and why other people's delay will result in delay on your game play.
TT only transfers small packets of data back and forth, referred to by some developers as "vectors". They are your character's x and y coordinates (location) and simple actions (mouse clkings, Arrow, function and CNTL keys) relative to other stuff in each scene/instance. That's is why a huge complex scene can be played even over just a few 100's Kbits of data transfer and for 100's of characters in one playground.
Also the game servers are replicated, a bunch of them serving several districts. So everyone on the same district is on the same server. But there are several servers, some in Washington/Oregon Ca on West Coast, some on the East Coast, some in UK/France etc... etc... Your delay will vary based on how far you are from the server in terms of # of internet hops to the host server. When they take down a district, they often take down a server. Push updates and maintainence updates will take down all the game servers till the updated image is loaded and then synch'ed up on your PC each time you log-in for each version or release.
Sorry this was probably more than you asked for. Toontowncool: Ok so its the internet strength and it effects when you press f6. You press it several times, you can see the numbers change like: latency 491 +or - 593 ms. And this will not be visible for other toons in Toonth (Toon version of Earth). It wont be visible in a bubble and speedchat bubble. It will be visible to your secret friends.
