So if you read the capslocked text up there, you'd know that I pronounce it just how it looks - Pwn. No extra letters, and no vowels. Just pwn.
Everything you say has to have a vowel sound. You can't say "pwn" without a vowel sound in there somewhere.

I and everyone I know says it "pown."

"pwn" is "1337 5p34x" (leet speak, which I despise) for "own".

"pwnd" is "owned".

I was told by a geek friend that I can find the definition in the Urban dictionary. It defines it as:

1.pwned

A corruption of the word "Owned." This originated in an online game called Warcraft, where a map designer misspelled "owned." When the computer beat a player, it was supposed to say, so-and-so "has been owned."

Instead, it said, so-and-so "has been pwned."

It basically means "to own" or to be dominated by an opponent or situation, especially by some god-like or computer-like force.
"Man, I rock at my job, but I still got a bad evaluation. I was pwned."

OR

"That team totally pwned us."

I say it like this:
puh-Whuh-N-ed
It sounds weird, and there are not really dashes in it, it's just showing how I say it.

Might want to take things from the Urban Dictionary with a grain of salt.

Near-position key substitutions 'y' in place of 't', 'p' in place of 'o', '7' in place of '4'', '3' in place of 'E', along with the visual similarity substitutions like '4' in place of 'A', '()' in place of '0' or 'o', along with the dropping of vowels; were all in use long before WOW ever existed; as a means of obfuscating passwords in such a way as to spell-out easy to remember words or numbers with strings of numbers, letters and symbols.

This comes from the culture of the "glass house", quite frankly.

look where the the letters P and O are a simple miss of the letter O and you have the word pwn. Its pretty simple reason for the misspelling of the word.

There is just Sooo! much wrong here.

First, you don't pronounce "pwn" at all. It's online text language, and people who actually SAY stuff from online text were BORN "pwned".

Yes, "pwned" originated as a typo of "owned", but not from Warcraft.
The original Warcraft was not an online game, and never was.
Warcraft II used direct connect, not what we normally consider "online" and when it was updated to the BattleNet Edition "pwned" was already in common use. They added the "pwned" message as humor, because it was being used by then.

Nobody knows for sure who first hit "p" instead of "o" when typing "Own", probably some poor slob on the first typewriter. Could even pre-date that. Like the guy who wondered why the morse operator on the Titantic kept sending "S.P.S.", and before that, the smoke signals coming from Little Big Horn that said: "Custer - Pwned!"

Nobody knows for sure when "pwned" first started to be used deliberately, but I remember seeing it used in old online games back in the 80s. The ones who think they know where it came from are just a bunch of noobs.

On Topic: I had no clue so many pronounced it powned. I was inspired to make this poll by so randomly looking up stuff on wikipedia. Wikipedia may not be 100% true, but it still pwns.
