Toontown is drawn in 3D software written by cogs so there's large gray world outside of the colorful toon world (I sense a conspiracy). In a few places game glitches allow you break into the gray world. Just like in the Matrix, the rules are different out here. The floor is invisible, your elevation is controlled by unknown forces, there are no walls, if you pass through a real toontown wall you can't go back, and if you try to bypass too much of the level you will see other toons but not be able to reach where they are. If you're all alone or in a group that wants to experiment you can explore as much as you like. If you are in a normal group that wants to get things done you need to stick to the known uses of that gray world. If you are stuck, go towards any stair or back to where you entered. You might need to help a toon that has gotten stuck for the first time and doesn't know how to get out. "This way" and "Follow me" works wonders.
The most common reason to go outside the normal toon world is to bypass a puzzle that is difficult or time consuming. One such puzzle is a Mints room with a single large gear, several boxes and shelves, one plunger, and the 5 power up barrels up on a ledge. Toons will jump behind an Ice Cream barrel underneath a money rack, open their schticker book, and disappear, then reappear up near the barrels. There are multiple ways to break out of this room but you rarely see anything other than this technique which easy enough to do in a few seconds with some practice.
Jump behind the Ice Cream barrel. Sometimes the barrel is very resistant so keep trying.
Push forwards and rotate until the gray and color alternate. You've rotated too far if your toon walks away from the barrel.
Open your schticker book and you will be bounced out. Carefully walk towards the ledge. You might need to walk all the way to the stair to get your elevation corrected.
For added fun stand just before any wall barrier and select Angry. If you are positioned right other toons will see your face animation sticking out from the wall just like the elevator fun and run over to you. The Angry sound should warn them to look around. This can be very useful when teaching other toons how to break out into the gray world. It lets them know that you really are behind the wall and haven't disappeared.
