August 11, 2003 [sv1.0.6.13.test] release candidate
New Welcome Valley district. Welcome Valley is a special virtual district that is made up of multiple sub-districts, each of which includes only the Toontown Central neighborhood. Newly created Toons are placed first in Welcome Valley until they leave by their own action.

Well, I'll be darned. Toontown is being segregated, but at least we can see that the noobs will be able to get out of where they're put as soon as they try. Yay!
Guess I'll make a new toon in test tonight and see what it's like.

It's not segregation I don't think...it's a welcome area...it says they can leave when they want...
I guess they are trying to avoid the large amount of traffic in TTC...all the new registrations are sent there. It sounds like an advanced toontorial almost...you defeat your first cog in the toontorial.

New Welcome District
I'm not sure what the objective is. As soon as you run through the tunnel to another playgroud you end up in a different district. It looks to me like a place to dump all new toons, but after that it's Toontown as usual.

It's basically a new district isn't it?
Toons are stuck there until they figure out they can switch districts... My son's new toon (Skids Jabberbounce) kept getting booted in Welcome Valley though, when he hit his friends details and when he tried to teleport to her too.

Toons are stuck there until they figure out they can switch districts... Nope. Going through a tunnel to a different playground area just moves to to a "normal" district, without any notice. If you are in a different playground area, and select the Noobie district, it puts you back to TTC. A free ride I guess, if you don't have TTC Teleport. Noobies won't know that, though. If they had the tunnels to other streets blocked, and put a message up telling you how to change districts, that would work. As it is, it doesn't really do anything useful. A side note: the camera tracking is messed up. I had my POV set to far back, and when I went to the Library for a task, the thing over the entry blocked what LIbrarian Larry was saying. I had to click through his stuff by the sound as my mouse rolled over his words. :S Very noobie-hostile. -rcv- Kid Bugs |

Ya that's weird...
Not sure what they are trying to accomplish with this... They should just give the new toons their own server...I tried my test toon and discovered she was switching districts when she hit Donalds Dock...:shrug:

The thing I would be concerned about for some new users is that if they don't have highspeed internet or their computer system/graphics card is slow they may have difficulties with lag and gameplay. This could disappoint the new user.

Can't Stay in Welcome Valley
Upon verifying that I was in Welcome Valley, I logged off and then back on. I was routed to Test Valley instead of Welcome Valley.
I also found that when teleporting back to the playground, I ended up in Test Valley instead of Welcome Valley where I had just been. Hmmmm.....

Where are the 'multiple sub districts' ??
In the special virtual world?? It just looks like TTC anywhere, but the release notes make it sound like something different, unless its not working ?? good idea though...

Well, started a new toon on test to see how it would work out. The big problem I have with the setup is that it doesn't tell you when you change from one neighbourhood (server) to another (i.e. when you leave TTC). I really can't see the point of this server. Do the n00bs really need to be kept away from the rest of us? I'm trying to figure out what problem this is supposed to fix, but nothing seems to make any sense.
If this TTC is just for the new toons, then what's the point of have a TTC on all of the other servers? Unless they are all overwhelmed with newbies, in which case the answer ought to be adding more complete servers, since newbies don't stay newbies forever. Maybe I'm missing something, but this really seems like a solution in search of a problem. |
