Disneys updated privacy policy

Recieved this today in an E-Mail from Disney. Does anyone know what this is about? Seems like they want permission to send tons of junk mail =0

Important Information About the Walt Disney Internet Group’s Privacy Policy

Dear vr_toontown

When you registered with our site, we pledged to handle the personal information you provided safely and with great respect, including being clear about how we collect and use your personal information. As part of this commitment, we want to advise you of important changes we are making to our general privacy policy. These changes will apply to personal information you provided in the past as well as any personal information you may provide in the future. These changes are summarized below and a separate FAQ (frequently asked questions) page is also available. We are also making changes in the form of our kids’ privacy policy. We encourage you to review the updated privacy policies in their entirety, click here.

You may accept, or “opt in” to, the terms of the updated general privacy policy in multiple ways: you may accept through an e-mail (like this one), at log-in, or through the privacy policy links on one of our family of sites; alternatively, you may accept the updated privacy policy as part of a purchase on one of our family of sites. If you do not proactively accept the updated general privacy policy and, instead, you take no action, your data will continue to be handled under the previous privacy policy, your access to certain services within our sites will be limited, and you will continue to receive emails from us in accordance with your existing contact permissions.

The changes that we are making to our general privacy policy include:
To provide seamless service across our businesses, we may share your information with our “offline” or non-Internet-based businesses. For example, if you make plans online for a vacation at the Walt Disney World® Resort, you will be able to update your vacation plans over the phone by speaking to a representative who has access to the relevant information. Your information may also be shared with our “offline” or non-Internet-based businesses to identify relevant products and services and communicate offers. As always, you have the choice to receive information and special offers from our family of businesses. To review and update your contact permissions, click here.

We may communicate with you through postal mail as well as e-mail. For example, we might send you a postcard if your e-mail address is no longer valid or you might receive a special offer or free sample of a product by postal mail, assuming you have provided the relevant permission.

We may share your information with carefully selected third parties whose products and services we think would interest you. For example, if you indicate that you have an interest in cooking, we might share your information with a reputable third party so that they can send you a special offer for a new cookbook. Please note, we will not rent or sell your e-mail address. Again, you can easily control whether we share your information with third parties by updating your contact permissions, click here.

We may obtain information you have provided to third parties to improve our communications with you. For example, we might update your address after a recent move based on information you supply to the United States Post Office. Another example would be tailoring our communications and site experience based on your interests (e.g., golf) to make them more relevant for you.

We may amend our privacy policy in the future. We will always notify you in advance of any material changes and, as always, you can easily modify your contact permissions, click here.
Again, we thank you for the opportunity to serve you.

Cordially,
Walt Disney Internet Group Guest Services

Sounds kinda fishy to me. Any lawyers (real ones, not those who think they know) that can suggest what they think?

New European Laws have come into effect which basically states that all sites offering a sellable product has to have a clearly defined policy on privacy, with an opt-out option.

"The Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulation" came into force 11th December 2003 (Thursday). Since a lot of people are from Europe, and Disney have European offices, Disney are probably just covering their backs.

I just wondered why it wasn't addessed to me or my username. I almost thought it was spam since I have no idea who "vr toontown random letters and numbers" is.

I checked out the link and it definately disturbed me to know that disney is doing all they can to get my personal information and give me even more useless spam email. I was even thinking about subscribing to that blast thing on their site as well for my 3 yr old but now I'm not so sure....
