They are either ignorant of what is going on, as in don't even realize that the guild exists, and simply don't want to be bothered by having to help lower laff toons. Or perhaps they have strange senses of humor and think irritating people is funny. Or maybe they are simply spawn of satan. Who knows?

I suspect the term griefers is used to describe more a generalized type of disruptive and uncooperative behavior, than the underlying reasons behind it. I'm sure we are all familiar with the sort of behavior referred to so I won't elaborate beyond describing it as antisocial. My guess is that the motivation and reasons behind the behavior are enormously varied (it would be a great opportunity for a physchology thesis).
I can suggest some possibilities; maybe others can comment or add to this? Prior unpleasant experiences of their own, and retribution come to mind first. Digging down into the reasons for that a bit further, I'd hazard that poorly developed communication skills and some perceived injustice could be factors. Boredom, as in underutilized energy and brainpower, I think might be factors. I suspect some griefing is due to misperception: for example inexperienced play can sometimes be misconstrued as deliberate mischief. On the other extreme, experienced players can become enraged when inexperienced, or to their worldview, uncooperative and disruptive, players disrupt their game play, work up gags, waste precious game time, and otherwise don't play the way they have come to view as optimum. Lastly, and I suspect very rarely, there may be deliberate malicious sociopathic griefing. In a population the size of TT, I would be surprised if there were any card carrying professional CCG griefers. But I could be wrong. Jimmy |
