Angry Decisions and their consequences

I made a decision a few days ago to do the last bit of upgrades to my computer. When my computer crashed in July, it took four months to figure out what was wrong and fix it, and in the process much of the computer got replaced. New mouse, new motherboard and RAM, new power supply (which turned out to be the problem, the power supply was going bad) and then a few months ago a new Vid card (and oh yeah a new keyboard too). All that is left that isn't new is the CDRW and DVD drives, and the CPU, and the sound card (which was top of the line when the computer was built, so is still quite good). So, I decided that it was time to do the DVD burner and CPU upgrade. I took my computer to my "guy" this morning (I can do most stuff myself, but not the CPU) and told him, "take your time, I bought an ethernet card for my daughter's computer, so I won't be Jonesing, I will be cool..."

So I installed the ethernet card onto my daughter's computer tonite, went to install my old vid card... and lo and behold this motherboard has no slot for a video card. OK, so I am hoping that the onboard vid card is good enough to play toontown with. After 3 hours of problems with my ISP (it didn't want to recognize this computer as a valid connection even though the ethernet card was installed correctly and functioning) I finally get online... sign onto TTC.com and Disney tells me NO GO, sorry, your old video card is just TOO OLD (no 3Dgraphics support).

SIGH

so, it boils down to this. I made the decision to upgrade my CPU hoping that my gaming experience would improve, and now I have to go without my game for an unknown period of time.

Peaches, and anyone else getting close to level 50, I am sooo sorry and hope I make it back in time for your celebration! And Sindy, by the way, I caught another devil ray for you hon, I am just trying to find a way to slip it into your bucket...

See you all soon I hope. I was already told that there are 3 computers ahead of mine on the bench, and from experience with the tech assigned to it, it will be at least a week before he even STARTS on mine... and if there are any SNAFUs, well, it could be a month. (yeah, they do give me a really good price, that's why I still go there).

I don't know how old this computer is. There have been at least 2 owners before us. My sister bought it used, and got frustrated with how slow it was so gave it to her son when she had hers made by my guys... then got frustrated that it was going to take so much upgradiing to be a real usable computer, so she was going to give it to goodwill. I said I would be goodwill for the day and take it off her hands and use spare parts to make it a word processor for my daughter, and if that didn't work I would install Linux on it and play with it that way. Took windows 95 off of it a couple months ago and put win2kpro on, but so far have had no reason to use it really. Promised my daughter that when she took care of her responsibilities enough (i.e. keeping her room clean enough and doing her homework on time), we would get a second TT account and a router and get this thing on the internet... looks like that promise is going to be more expensive than I thought!

PS I am in Texas, not the west coast anymore... but miss the Pacific Ocean every moment of every day, hence my location in my profile...

More bad news: Three computers can easily be done in a day considering there's no actual fixing being done. (Everything is replaced, not fixed) If he's making you wait longer than 2 days it's because he's overcharging you and needs the lengthy delay to justify the amount.

Good deal for you. Yes this computer is old... that is why this is the one I pulled out when mine was being upgraded, not the one I use on a daily basis. *EDIT: SORRY I THOUGHT YOU ASKED HOW OLD THE ONE I AM USING IS* The one I use on a daily basis was made for less than $300 a few years back, and has been upgraded for around $350 in that time. I could concievably have "made" a new computer, but I am happy with upgrading a little at a time as long as I have friends who will walk me through it when I need advise, and help me out when I need them to do the stuff I can't (like installing a CPU). I don't get big chunks of money often, and when I do I have other things I want to do with it than to replace things that still work.

Fixing (of the other computers on the bench) is being done, as these guys are not computer repair guys as far as their business goes. They are a data transfer company (meaning they help large corporations like banks, hospitals, etc) go paperless, and help friends out on the side for no labor charge when they can. The whole deal is, they will walk you through it verbally, and only take computers onto the bench when it is a complicated problem (or past your level of comfort) with the understanding that it may not be a fast favor. So, I would say, yes, the price (labor free) does justify the "lengthy delay", just not how you assumed.

Ah well, I have about 5 movies I have purchased and not watched in the past month or so, and tonite I got to go see Revenge of the Sith without feeling like I was missing out on toontown. It was very liberating!

Have fun all, see you soon!

you know when i read your first post i thought how good could these guys be if it took four months to isolate a failing power supply and i wanted to say something then but, bit my tounge. i'm glad i did because i would've felt bad now after finding out pc repair is not their primary business and they are doing you a favor. here's hoping it's fixed quickly. enjoy your hiatus

Just out of curiosity

I just noticed that my OP got edited for "inappropriate/non-G rated discussion" and I have no clue what was originally there that was inappropriate or PG+ rated. Not that it is the end of the world or anything, but can someone who read the OP before it was edited (or Batleth, who edited it) remember and PM me regarding what was there that might have been offensive or against posting rules, so that I can avoid it in the future? Thanks, would rather edit myself than have someone else do it, if at all possible.
