I don't how much of an authority a site is that has a statement like this at the top of the page:

This ESL vocabulary workshop includes a part of the 1000 most common words in English. Click on the links at the end of the page that lead to other pages that are included in this list of the 1000 most common words in English for ESL EFL English learners and teachers.

It is common practice, and common courtesy, to expand unusual abbreviations the first time you use them in a statement intended for the general reader. It took me a few seconds to reallize that they were talking about "English as a Second Language" and "English as a First Language".

I'm afraid that English is going to come to be known as EDL (English the Dead Language).
