Help?

Im a little confused...
Well...
When I plant trees it's a bit confusing.
I looked at the Guide and it doesn't seem to help me.
Well,

EXAMPLE:

I plant a Cupcake Throw Gag Tree,
Then after it grows the gags,
then I Pick the gags and get +1 under damage,
then later I remove the gag tree,
then my +1 goes away and it's not
bold anymore.

Why does it do that?

Gag tree bonuses only exist if the tree is alive and healthy.
