I just found out Captain Murky Electrogargle wants to be my friend... but I didn't get his message from the 17th till today, and that's not the first time I've gotten a late message.

Anyway, I'd have replied, but the name field on the reply cuts off the last two characters in his name, and won't let me add them back in.

Can anyone help me on this?

If you look up a user in the "Members" list, then click on the name, you can select the user's info page from where you can select "Send this member a PM". The name field will be filled in automatically.

I guess that's a problem with allowing longer user names here.

I use the member list all the time. Is it possiable this is one of the things that dont' open up for X# of days or X# of posts? Like the changing your title is available for a while.
