ANNOYING Problem
My wife and I have toontown on both our PCs.
We just reinstalled windows (went from 98 to xp). Mine runs perfectly fine. Hers however, runs in slow motion. It's basically unplayable. Turning the resolution all the way down helps a little bit but its basically still unplayable. I have uninstalled toontown, reinstalled toontown. Same problem I have uninstalled toontown and deleted all instances of it and then reinstalled it. Same problem. We both have different paying accounts and she is growing very frusterated with this problem. Her PC is more than capable to run toontown. When she was using win98 it ran without a problem. The only thing i can think of is a registry based issue which I don't know enough about to mess with in windows XP. If anyone is able to help resolve this problem I will give you a big yummy pie! |

Hmmm
You said that her machine was more than capabile to run toontown....but...does it meet the minium req. for win XP?
If so, I would look at the different hardware in the 2 machines. Perhaps the motherboards are different or the sound or video cards. Just some things to consider.

Its hard to say without knowing your system specs etc.
However, other than updateing your bios and video/sound drivers i would say to turn off all other running programs such as antivirus program and run defrag. Ensure you have plenty of hard drive space for your swap file and that its a decent size. Ive had mine at 400 and it seemed to be ok, usualy people say to fix it (set the min and max to the same size) at 3 times the amount of system ram you have. Next open your display properties and goto direct3d settings and change your mipmapping to "best performance". Running adaware wouldnt hurt either and an update antivirus scan of you hard disk just to be safe. |

It certainly does sound like a video issue. You could try running using the Open GL shortcut like Growlur did
I can see! It solved a different video issue for him, but it might work. |

My laptop runs TT just fine, but my desktop, which is an 800MHz Athlon system with a pretty good Matrox Mystique AGP video card, runs it really badly. I can play lots of 3D games no problem, but TT is very herky-jerky. The very newest video drivers actually crash my computer 10 seconds into the game, whereas the Microsoft staple ones just run horribly (to the point that I can't fish or do any of the trolley games like tug-o-war). You could see if your manufacturer makes DX7 or OpenGL drivers, then run the game under that mode (there are shortcuts or you can make a shortcut yourself with the proper options...I have the switches and what they do on my work machine somewhere if you need). Alternately, you could try a different video card or work with tech support. Good luck with the problem. Or, you know, with kicking your SO off of their computer and using that.

Well, it sounds like it's either video or RAM.
RAM is the easy thing to get out of the way quick. If you have less than 512 meg consider adding RAM to the machine, if you have the same type of RAM in the other computer you may be able to temporarily swap some from it to see if that improves things. Windows XP is a much greater memory hog than Win98, so that is why it may have worked okay on the older OS. Video problem is the next thing to look at. Again, it may be a quick way to verify whether this is the problem if you can swap the video card from the other machine. If that resolves the issue, you may want to post here what the problem video card is, we may have a fix. A REALLY off-the-wall possibility is the sound card. A quick test is to try the shortcuts included in TTwindow.zip that are named "Toontown sw_midi" and "Toontown hw_midi". Also, you could try swapping sound cards between the machines, too. As was pointed out, it is really hard to troubleshoot this without knowing any details about the computer. -rcv- Kid Bugs |

I wouldn't rule out sound drivers as being too far out of the realm of possibility. I'm a game developer, and I've seen more than a few issues of terrible performance due to flaky sound drivers. In many cases, there's not much a game developer can do other than suggest that consumers update drivers. The world of device drivers is a wild and wooly land.
Given that the original poster said that the same machine used to run TT just fine before the OS upgrade, it's almost certainly related to drivers. XP includes DX8 as part of its core system, so perhaps it might also be an older driver being emulated for DX8. What is the hardware spec of the machine having trouble (video card, sound card, memory)? Perhaps we can help point you in the right direction for driver updates. Also, try running with some of the shortcuts available here: DX7 vs. DX8, hw vs. sw midi, OGL vs DX. |

I would definatly start out by replacing the RAM if possible. A segment in your mem module may have gone bad, or you just don't have enough. And secondly disable the sound card temporarily, or just remove it for test purposes.
As mentioned above using the minimum req for ToonTown or XP, in this matter, can play a big role in your issue. Doesnt really sound like a graphic issue to me, since your only experiencing lag. And since you were running 98 and it worked without a prob. XP requires alot more RAM to run proprely.

I'm not very computer literate, but I had a BIG problem getting toontown to work consistently when I first loaded it on my computer.
I have an athalon 1600+ with 256 DDS RAM, Win 98se, a nice video card (but nothing fancy)...definitely good enough for this game. I had bad graphics problems. I'd install the game (taking 1 1/2 to 2 hours for all the downloads and updates) and it'd play no problem. If I closed out of the game and try restarting the game at a later time it wouldn't work. I'd try all kinds of fixes (open GL worked sometimes) but eventually would have to uninstall and reinstall. This went on for almost a week before Buster came over and figured it out for me. (troubleshooting on the phone *****, btw) Long story short, he figured out it was the integrated sound card. (he has a VERY nice sound card, I chose the cheeper way to go). I went and bought a $25 sound card, he disabled the integrated one, and I haven't had a problem since. The funny thing is, the error that came up when it wouldn't play (on the bug report page) was a graphics error. So, it didn't make sense that it would be the sound card. Oh, and disney took over a week to respond to my bug request. I didn't even get a "thanks for writing" auto response. I hope they've at least improved their tech support division since then. Anyhow, not sure this helps, but it goes to show that the problem may be where you least expect it to be. -Babs |

I have a slightly similar issue. We figured it was the network set up for the DSL. Sweeties system runs fine (better computer than mine too) but I freeze up a lot. Especially if he is in Games, I tend to freeze up almost everytime. I also freeze up duing the end of battles so when I am no longer frozen all my friends have moved on.
We tried it without anyone else using the internet connection and I still freeze up occasionally, though not quite as frequently. Need to check to see if I just need a better computer or what. I have at least the minimum specs and am running Win98. Gets very frustrating --Queen Fireball Wildpounce |
