I would upgrade if I were you...my opinion. You are going to have enough headache when you get to the last few fish so don't put yourself through it now
. The only reason my current toon is still on the twig is for the challenge of trying to get all the fish I can with it.There are some great tips from ppl, my favorite hints are from Batleth for which streets have a better chance of giving up your fish. Good luck! |

I have all the other hard to catch fish, I think, except the full moon which I can't catch yet with this rod.
I guess my thought was that if I stuck with this rod less fish in the mix I can catch... more chance of getting those 3. I was hoping to get these, get my new rods and bing-bang-boom get those that I just need a stronger rod for... Been rethinking this theory lately though...lol... patience is not always my strong point :-) |

That's a tough one. According to Batleth's fishing guide there are seven fish that can be caught with the steel rod, three of which are hard to get (Grand Piano, Grizzly, and Full Moon). So you will easily catch four with the steel rod and then have six you are stuck getting with the steel rod.
I would stay with the smaller pole. Maybe there's someone on here that can say they couldn't wait any longer and grabbed their gold rod with just three fish left to catch and caught them relatively quickly because of the new pole strategy. But you can't ever go back! |

You know, I stayed with the smaller rods for a long time with my second toon. I fished a bazillion buckets, never getting an ultra rare on her. I caved and pulled my dusty steel rod out of the mailbox recently because being that she is such a small toon (58 laff), I wanted more bang for my buck with Jellies when I caught a jar. (It definately didn't stink getting new species again either lol.)
I think Batleths small rod till maxed method is great, especially if you stick to the twig till you have those really tough ones. However, that being said, I personally don't think it is worth it when you are going from Hardwood to Steel. As somebody mentioned above, doing it for the challenge, doing it to throw something a little different into a very same old same old boring "sport" is one thing. But to do it because it gives it gives a greater chance at success? Meh. I've seen many a toon catch nearly all of their 70 fish with a gold rod - start to finish - so it obviously can be done. Long story short, if it is frustrating you, and you are really anxious for your laff boost - go get your Steel and celebrate your 60. Just my opinion. Good luck with whatever you decide!! MLW |

hehe... think I am more anxious for that "new species" again... it has been a long time... that devil ray frustrates me more than all. I have never caught it with any of my toons...
Decided after today I am going to dust off that steel rod and go for it... enough is enough...lol... thanks for the push

Get the Gold!
No reason to keep the smaller rod unless you can't handle the 5 bean per cast cost. I used to think it matered I had the twig on my test toon and all the other rods in my mailbox. After fishin my Matt Wild Horse on open and catching all 70 my belief is that the rod don't mater, other than your ability to handle the cost. Get the big rod and fish, fish, fish. I went from 34 fish to 60 fish in 3 hours on my test toon. It was fun!

my friend told me using a stick rod you are more luckly to find a devil ray. he told me it was bc it was light (the ray) and higher rods would give more fish to catch so it would be hardcer in ddl. btw i caught devil ray in the brrrgh with my golden rod :P.
