The rod has nothing to do with it. The fish gold rods get are too rare to expect.

It has to be via the boots.

Seriously helps to have four at the same pond to hasten progress.

The Gold Rod is only needed to catch the Bulldog Fish, all the other species can be caught with the Steel Rod. Since there are no specific species listed on the card, just the type, you don't need the Gold Rod to win.

You don't need a Gold Rod, but you do need LUCK. L-U-C-K. Infact, to do anything in TT, you need luck. lol

Acttually...you can...just get a lot of boots and for the Bull dog...you can get just a regular dog fish.

Yes, you can. Because you don't need specific spieces, and the only fish needed on Gold Rod is Bull dog, you can use any old dog to fill in the spot. You can in fact win without Gold Rod as others said.
