How Many Parts Do You Lose?

So does anyone have any ideas how they work out how many parts you lose in the VP fight? I thought it depended on how long the pie-throwing takes, but I had a really quick fight the other day I lost FOUR pieces! Usually it's 2 or 3.

usally if your on the last level of a cog like i am im at a glad hander level 8 you will usally lose 4 peces

I do know that it has nothing to do with the battle itself since you lose them before you start fighting the first round of cogs.

I have had to jump (<Alt><F4>) from group and have seen them missing if i jump anytime after we leave the elevator. I think this has somthing to do with the fact that the system does not log you out until you re-access your account and by then the VP has "poofed" the cog disguises off.

I have heard theories based on the position in the elevator but I haven't committed myself to figuring it out.
