you are totally right except for the use of "vous" which exatly like you said equivalent of english "you" its just that you simply use it not with "people of higher social class than you" but just with those with whoom you are not (or not yet) familiar. And with your family, friends, mates, coworkers (not on the first day though

), or if you're young enough - with people of your age, etc in french language is used "tu".
