I find it much easier to train than drop. Drop is seldom used until you gain pianos. I would often go an entire week without reaching for a drop gag. Trap, however, is needed constantly. It assists lure, and should be used as such. Once you start going through mints you will find that even marbles is welcome. I mean, if someone else is trapping then you should defer to them until yours is bigger, but otherwise you should make sure there is a trap on every lure if possible.
As far as training on your own, I again found trap easier than drop since drop misses so often until you get the skill points up.
