I've gotten booted off the Back 9 more times than I care to remember, and I have friends that it has happened to as well, regardless of who's running with whom. It's a common complaint. I wouldn't think your friend is getting the boot only because he or she is running with you.
The Middle 6's are a good idea, even for a while, if it happens frequently.
