Here's the story from both sides.
Your view: You accidentally backed up into the cogs. The other toons sit there and laugh at you as you go green.
The other toons' view: The other toon's think that you are a griefer trying to rid them of their cogbucks. They think when you say "Sorry!" and things like that, that you're just playing the nice act. They sit there so they won't have to do another bullion.
No matter how hard you try, some toons won't help you fight the final set of cogs if there's not an invasion. Most toons are in a rush, it seems.
