Yes.
It does this because it is making the graphics card work really hard.
Since the graphics card is working hard & the fan is running at high speed, this will cause the computer to have moderate heat on the surface where your computer is.
Be very careful if you are using a Mac laptop on carpet, or on your legs. If on the legs put something between you and the computer or your legs will get fried, like mine, such as a cooling pad. |

COMMON SENSE.
When a laptop starts to get hot, a natural reaction is to move it off your legs.
